Can We Truly Understand the Life of A Refugee?

I think it's difficult for us to truly understand other people's lives that are so radically different than ours because we will never be in their shoes. We can view their lives through a lens, but we will never feel the pain and loss that they deal with every day. It really struck me when the young African American boy was in the boat and he had no parents, and was told he was going to die.

I can not imagine the fear he must feel every day as their are no role models to guide him. Literature and film allow us to know what people are going through, but we can not feel the emotions they go through. Seeing the refugees being beaten at the border is horrible to watch, especially cause we view America as the land of opportunity.

These people may have been separated from their families, and are detained for an extended period of time before someone else determines their fate. Not having control over where you are going to live is something we will hopefully never have to go through, but these refugees deal with every day.

  1. I agree that fully understanding the life of a refugee can never truly be accomplished because we have never experience anything like them.

  2. I agree that we will never truly understand what a refugee is going through unless we experience something similar ourselves. However, I think we can try to be more understanding and considerate. Although we will never truly understand we can try to put ourselves in their shoes.
