Earl Sweatshirt and Meursault

Throughout reading The Stranger, Meursault shows that he is on a dark path and you can tell that there is a disconnect with him and his life, and from the real world. A song that really puts those feelings into art, is Grief, by Earl Sweatshirt. Grief is a song about Earl's battles with his addiction and depression, but he talks about it in a very existentialist way similar to how Meursault leads his life. One of the standout lines to me by Earl Sweatshirt is "Wanna step inside the valley we can talk addiction/When it's harmful where you goin' and the part of you that know it/ Don't give a f*ck, pardon me for going into detail". This relates to Meursault in a way not about addiction, but the paths they were going down. Meursault knew deep down that the way he was leading his life was wrong, but he didn't care, similar to Earl Sweatshirts sentiment, and I think that is one of the biggest problems with Meursault throughout the novel. The song itself is also a very dark sound, with The Stranger also having a very dark undertone, it is simply just two men going through struggle, Earl Sweatshirt also discusses losing his grandmother, similar to how Meursault lost his mother.

  1. This is a really cool comparison. I thinks it's cool that you could find another person that is similar to Meursault because of his unique and until common personality. I like your analysis between the two and how you tied them together.
