Who is Beloved and What Does She Represent?

Right now in the Novel "Beloved", we are not quite sure who the character Beloved is, or what she represents. She is a grown women who has baby like tendencies in terms of the way she walks and talks, but she also has the strength to lift a rocking chair with one arm. Beloved may be a ghost in the story because she knows secrets of Sethe (the diamond earnings), and Denver that would be impossible for anyone to know.

Beloved may be a baby that Sethe had, and then died at a pretty young age. Beloved is allowing Sethe to re-access her memories from being enslaved and is actually making her more comfortable with rethinking about her past. Beloved is having both a positive and negative aspect in the families relationship, because she is giving them the power to talk about their old lives, but Beloved also put her hands around Sethe's neck.

Beloved being placed by the river I think is symbolic of Sethe's water breaking, and the symbolism of water that is prevalent throughout the book.  Not being sure who Beloved is in the story us creating a sense of suspense in the story. Beloved may be the mother of Sethe because Sethe says she remembers who her mother was by a burn mark on her torso. Right know we do not know the answer of who Beloved is, but I'm sure through more past experiences we will get our answer.
