If I Did Not Get a Headache it Would've Been Enlightening

The effect of being in the camp through virtual reality was more impactful than it other techniques. The ability to see through another person’s eyes allowed me to feel like I was there. Unfortunately, there are limitations which downplay the gravity of the experience.

For example, you cannot smell what is happening. Though this may seem small the ability to smell the costs of a lack of running water are not tangible. Additionally, we cannot feel the thirst they feel or the heat on their faces. While sight is helpful to the ability to understand their plight the other senses are not including making the small elements less impactful. This is also a personal problem but my head hurt very badly and I could not see. The limitations of the technology were certainly present but I felt as though I had a better understanding of their situation once I finished the video.

  1. I completely agree with you, the experience was incredibly enlightening and opened my eyes to things I never would have expected to be able to see in such detail before without going to that country. But I do think that there are also drawbacks to the experience, because like you said, it isn't as accurate as it could have been. One thing you stated that I also thought to myself was that I wish that I would have been able to smell what they were smelling, it would have made it even more realistic. Smell is such a powerful sense, so being able to smell exactly what the kids being recorded did would have linked me to their experiences even more. And while you said you wish you would have been able to feel exactly what they were feeling, and that would have been amazing, I feel like watching it alone helped me emotionally feel connected to them and gave me a better understanding of their situation emotionally.

  3. Honestly, I kind of agree and kind of disagree. Especially in the beginning I also had a headache and was super confused. But as the chapter progressed, it made a lot more sense as more of the story became clear. Both Sethe and Paul D's viewpoints give the reader more details of their pasts and present as the first two chapters continue, so I was able to follow them more as it progressed.
