A mother's baby girl, born to early for her own good and died to soon to be named, is dubbed Beloved by the headstones provided by the ten minutes her mother sacrificed to the engraver. Truthfully wishing to engrave Dearly Beloved on her daughter's headstone, Sethe considered giving an extra ten minutes more, however for what she got she settled for for it encapsulated everything.
Years later, unable to forget or leave her baby girl, Sethe remains in the home with Denver and Paul D. she believes is haunted by her baby.
One night, upon arriving home from a special carnival, Sethe, Denver, and Paul D. encounter a young woman on the ground, possibly on the brink of death, close to their home. Taking her in, they learn two major things about her: 1) she isn't from their area and 2) she goes by the named Beloved. Coincidence? I think not.
Beloved, being an uncommon name as it is, just happens to be the same name as the baby girl's headstone that died several years before. Not only are their names similar, but the young woman's behavior and appearance resembles a baby as well. Her speech is choppy and short like a child, her skin is soft and untouched as a freshly born baby, and her eyes are referenced as familiar by Denver and Sethe many times. Not only does this suggest a connection between Sethe's baby girl and Beloved, but between Sethe and Beloved as well. Sethe immediately has a fondness, almost like a mother's loved, for Beloved. She doesn't feel uncomfortable or unsafe in the presence of Beloved, nor does Denver. Both almost immediately develop a deep connection with Beloved, while Paul D. feels the opposite.
Similarly back when he first entered Sethe and Denver's home, he felt uncomfortable and skeptical about the aura of the house as he currently feels currently towards Beloved. Are these similar reactions connected? Is the young woman's body possessed by the baby's spirit? Is there even a connection between the two in the first place? Let me know Huskies.
