Going through the motions

In part 1 of the stranger Meursault, the main character, is a very troubled man. Living in France, he goes through his days living a normal life. One day he receives a telegram from his home of Algiers in Algeria. His mother just died. He doesn't seem to care. He plays it off like it doesn't matter saying,” The case will be closed, and everything will feel more official (p.3)”.  By saying this Meursault displays his true colors to the reader. He shows how selfish and how monochromatic he is. If my mother died, I would feel so much emotion. He just keeps moving through life without a care. This isn't the only thing that displays his emotionless mindset. While at the funeral for his mother, one of her friends begins to cry softly. This angers and annoys Meursault. He says,” I wished I didn't have to listen to her anymore (10).” But on the next page he says he says,”She sniffled a lot. Then she finally shut up (11).” The fact that he wanted her to stop showing affection for the lose of her only friend is pretty mean. He ‘s extremely selfish and his demeanor seems to be getting worse. But this rude and selfish behavior may stem from the loss of his mother. This might be his lashing out and display of emotion. Maybe he just wants to get everything over with and move on to the end of life. Anger has many forms, maybe this is his.
