Orientalism

Southernization started in southern Asia, and spread to India, the middle east, and the Mediterranean. It was the beginning of industry and trade, and it spread these area’s culture around the world. But when Europe took over development and started the first industrial revolution, western influence rose and took over most cultural ties westerners had with the east/southeast.

Western culture is so embedded in our lives that the only way many of us experience any part of eastern culture is through books, movies, and media, and this is where Orientalism has come into play. Most of these passages we have to experiencing this “other” culture has made it seem alien like, it is made dangerous, mysterious, and an inappropriate representation of what these people and places are actually like.

The word oriental just means a characteristic of the east. It could be used as an antonym to western, but because of Orientalism the word has a new definition from underlying connotations we have learned through the media’s representation of “The Orient.”

Western culture has actually become so invasive that the word "Southernization" in this drafted blog is underlined in red and given the "did you mean" option of "Westernization"!
