Hooded Figures

"And you are not the guy and still you fit the description because there is only one guy who is always the guy fitting the description" (108).
This line is repeated several times throughout the story. I believe it is because Rankine wanted the readers to understand how often this instance happens to innocent black people. It also portrayed the fact that the police abuse their power to take down these victims rather than the real suspect. The line also displays, and contradicts, the stereotype that all black people look the same, they all act the same, and they are all suspects.

  3. I completely agree that the stereotype of all black people looking, talking, and acting the same is something very prevalent in society today. The fact that people are taken as suspects and even convicted of crimes that they didn't commit solely due to the color of their skin is absolutely ridiculous.
