Music Poetry

The definition of music is the combination of sounds that make a beautiful form to express some kind of emotion. Poetry likewise, is a combination of words placed in a specific order to also express feelings. A song that I believe is poetry is "Bright" by Kehlani on the album "You Should Be Here": https://genius.com/search?q=bright%20kehlani . The songs musically tells the stories of two people, one young woman and one young man. The first half of the song describes how the young woman feels about herself. She begins the song by saying :"little girl watching her reflection as she parts her hair into four sections she says, 'I don't look like them, I don't look like them and I don't want what's on my head'". She follows the first few lines with a more positive note saying, "but baby girl don't be mislead". I view this as poetry because towards the beginning of the song, we as the reader experience the emotions and negative feelings this young lady has about herself. This is immediately turned around when these negative statements are shutdown when saying, "Can't nobody love somebody that do not love themselves, you are what you choose to be It's not up to no one else so be great, be kind, don't let them dim your light, a woman like the sun should always stay bright". An unhappy note immediately followed by a happier one leaves the reader/listener in a lighter mood. Not only is it poetry because of the meaning behind it but also the imagery, monologue, and repetition. Imagery is seen when describing the way the girl feels or views the magazines. Monologue is used when the characters describe themselves or what is bothering them and lastly repetition is used when describing how people should feel about themselves and that is; bright. Kehlani follows the story of a young girl with the story of a young man that is very similar.He doesn't feel like he is good enough and compares himself to his peers, but she explains in her lyrics that worrying about others is the least important thing people do. We are all unique in our own ways and we should let those features shine, hence the title of the song "bright".
