Making Sense of Micro-agressions

Citizen has addressed race relations in America in a whole different way which has brought newer perspective and how she writes and what she writes about makes it easier to understand as a teenager in America in the 21st century. Talking about current events and nationwide news stories that most of us today have seen or heard, makes it a more real absorbing experience. Her stories and poems are short and direct. And putting micro-aggressions next to big stories we know makes sense of how much white domination has continued into everyday situations that as even she says, we can sometimes look over or not address in the moment. There needs to be more awareness of micro-agressions, and relating them to big events makes them more evident. The writing about Serena Williams "acting out" during the tennis match made the readings in part one make more sense on why the person in the car didn't address their friend who made an ignorant statement on hiring black writers.
Reading Beloved before Citizen made a great foundation for understanding the beginning of the issues and how they were rooted in the past and brought to the present in different ways.

  1. I definitely agree that Rankine has completed a project with great and powerful meaning. I also agree that the use of current events and figures in social media provide a foundation for audience members to understand or connect with.
