Music Poetry- Sure Thing

The song I choose is, “Sure Thing” by Miguel, appeared on his debut album All I Want is You in 2010. Miguel is trying to illustrate the undeniable love/relationship he has with this girl is undeniably real. It’s all about being with a person who makes you “whole”, without them you're not anything. He is trying to show that you should be willing to do anything for the one you love and care about. The love he has for her is a “sure thing” hence the title of the song.

Miguel is the speaker in the song or you could say someone in love to avoid saying the artist is the speaker in the song. The audience really doesn’t matter for this song because it can be anyone, anyone can experience what it feels like to be in love. People who are in love can read about the experience of being in love. Also people who have been in love before can listen to this song and remember or relate to what it feels like to be in love. The occasion of the song is unknown because he could be talking about a girl from his past or he could be talking currently. He could be sitting in a chair deep in thought thinking about this girl. However, in the music video he spends much of his time dancing in a hallway which would make this the occasion.

The speaker of this song uses these 4 poetic devices: metaphor, simile, irony, and hyperbole. Miguel wisely uses metaphors and similes to emphasize the love in the relationship. An example of a metaphor is when Miguel says "I’m the reporter baby, you could be the news" and an example of a simile: “Love you like a brother”. By using these two poetic devices Miguel is able to demonstrate that the two lovers can not thrive without each other. He is also able to illustrate the love and bond that comes with spending a life with another person with the use of metaphors and similes all throught the song. Another poetic device Miguel uses is irony to emphasize how willing he is to do anything for the girl. An example of irony is when Miguel says “Saint, I’m a sinner”. It is ironic because saints don’t usually sin but this saint did. However, Miguel loves her so much he is willing to be a sinner in order to have her love because when in love you should be willing to do anything or be anything. A final poetic device used is hyperbole. An example of this is when Miguel says, “Even when the sky comes falling”. This is a hyperbole because the sky can not literally fall, it’s just impossible. However, Miguel uses it to show that even if the worst of the worst comes to them, they’ed still be together.

  1. I really liked your analysis of this song. You broke it down into different styles and devices, and thereby made it much easier to analyze. The "Saint, I'm a sinner" line was especially fascinating The multi-dimensional layers of poetry really shine through in this song.

  2. Nice job analyzing the song! I like how you talked about them generally saying what they were then talked about each one with lines to support it. I thought the line "Love you like a brother" was really interesting because you talked about how the theme was about love as well. I thought of it as a sort of connection between familial and romantic love. Nice job supporting that the song is poetry.
