The Satire Show

The movie, The Truman Show, is filled with satire. From irony to ridicule, the movie expresses the way media  shapes our lives and puts us under the dome of falsehood. The Truman Show is about an average man, Truman Burbank, who lives in a fake stereotypical world which is manipulated by the director. The town he lives in is full of actors and Truman begins to realize his fake world. He drastically finds a way to escape his horror of a world, as he soon discovers his life has been a lie and touches the limit of insanity. He is motivated to find his lost lover who is in the real world, as the audience of the show spectates his personal life at an absurd level.

During the movie, irony and ridicule reveals the way Truman's world is fake. For example, since the movie is set as a show, there are ads to make revenue. The characters around Truman advertise the products seen on the show in a ridicule way towards Truman to achieve this goal. Truman later confronts this in his own perspective. This correlates to how the media as well, advertises variety of products through its image or verbally. Such as a credible source using a product to promote it.

Another scene occurs when Truman tries to escape and sees if the people around him are real. During his escape, he tries to catch a bus to another city, the bus driver, an actor, seems troublesome to move the vehicle since he is not an actual bus driver but to Truman he is. Another example is when he sees surgeons performing an operation, since they are actors they do not know what to do, which is ironic since its their profession in the eyes of Truman. This shows that his surroundings are fake and taking a closer look would reveal so. As we look at media we see the things that we want to see and undermine its credibility therefore we are not prone to its false information.

When Truman tries to buy a flight, his surrounding captured the fear and risks of flying to persuade him not to. This is an example how the media devices us by putting information such as this to convince us whether or not to do something.

We rely on media so much it is hard to tell which is for our benefit and which is brainwashing us. The Truman Show successfully captures this through irony and ridicule in Truman's fake world. The movie express how the media controls our lives just like in the movie and how we perceive it as well. The movie is filled with satirical content and reveals the parallels between us and the deception of the media.

  1. This is a cool perspective on the persuasive ways of the media, although their true purpose is to provide us with the information with what is happening, they do use persuasion in their messages. It is important to recognize this when it occurs and I think the Truman show does this.
