Melissa McCarthy as Sean Spicer

The popular TV show Saturday Night Live (SNL) recently found great success in a sketch starring Melissa McCarthy as White House press secretary Sean Spicer. This piece not only brought out belly-aching laughs from the audience, but showed a comedic take on the chaos that is within our current White House.

In this piece, Melissa McCarthy harnesses some of Spicer's quirky habits, frustrated attitude and interesting spins on President Trump's actions to produce a hilarious work of satire. For example, McCarthy uses hyperbole to address Spicer's habit of chewing gum during press conferences by chewing an entire container of gum at once, rendering her character unable to speak at all. Another example, she shows irony when she accuses a reporter of using 'circular language' causing her and the president to lie about the immigration ban. This portion uses both irony and hyperbole to show the idiocy of the President's lies about the immigration ban and how he changes his story on hot-button issues so frequently.

While this SNL sketch was hilarious, it also pointed out some deeper problems to the audience about its topic-the White House press room. Because most Americans don't get to see what actually goes on within the press room and the White House, this sketch provided a comedic take on the ongoing utter chaos that exists. President Trump's White House is very much unlike those that have come before it because of the chaos, lies and confusion that it embodies, this SNL sketch demonstrates all of these aspects to audiences who would not typically see inside the White House.

  1. Pretty deep take off of a performance with heavily reliance on physical humor, but I like it! Nice!
