The Daily Satire

An example of contemporary satire is The Daily Show, a parody of news stations. The hosts will share the "current news" as if they were an actual, serious, news station, but in reality it is not. Just like any news station the hosts of the show will share the day's headline stories and add some commentary, sometimes serious and sometimes not as serious. In this specific section, Trevor Noah does a segment about Trump's congressional address where he plays some clips of the speech and comments on what the president states in his speech. Although usually The Daily Show uses more humor in their segments, this section was a bit on the serious side.

THE REAL TRUMP VS. THE TRUMP IN FRONT OF CONGRESS

The entire show is a parody, mixing in a touch of hyperbole, irony, sarcasm, and understatement. The hosts  take a serious story and create a segment that ridicules the story or they add some sarcastic commentary on the content of the story. For this segment, the host shows Trump's speech clip by clip and after each clip he mocks Trump by praising him for sharing statements that actually make sense or that seem to show his care for U.S citizens. However, this seemingly lighthearted conversation is actually trying to send a very important message to the viewers.

With this particular story, it is easier to understand the message that the host is trying to send. He praises the president for a good speech, which may seem like he is simply making fun of the president, however he is actually telling the viewers how ridiculous this speech was. The purpose of this section is to tell the audience that the president is not trustworthy, that although in this particular speech sounds like there is still hope for our country that what Trump is stating in this speech is the exact opposite from what he is actually doing at the moment. Our president is not truthful in his speech and that is a big danger for us. Those who heard this speech may think that these goals and efforts are going to provide hope for people, when in reality the policies and goals are going in an opposite direction. As I said before, this segment was on the more serious side, however a lot of the times The Daily Show will add more humor to lighten the mood of the topic while still communicating the important message to the audience. I think that they do this so that people will listen more and so that they can get across to a wider audience.
