Mersaults psychological detachment from the world follows him as he enters the prison system. Although he states that he will never enjoy speaking about this part of his life he also admits that (later) he sees no point in his reluctance.
He began to feel at home in his cell after Marie's visit, his life was at a stand still. However, during the visit he portrays a strong feeling o indifference to Marie's presence. In fact he hardly mentions her and the dialogue between them and instead focuses on every one else in the visitation room.
This just highlights Mersaults psychological state as he contradicts himself. First feeling rather annoyed by Marie's first and last visit but later realizing that her visit is what really made him feel as though he were in prison.
