Our Heart of Darkness
Today, our "heart of darkness" is closer than we may think. Like many other students are saying, the Austin neighborhood and west side of Chicago are our modern hearts of darkness, and so are neighborhoods that are similar. It's crazy that something so different is so close to us. Just a few blocks away from the school, you are immersed into a culture completely unknown to most Oak Park and River Forest-ers. We think of the Austin neighborhood as dark because it's something different. We think it's all bad, when in reality, it's a neighborhood like any other. There are families, homes, schools, and communities. This enforces the fact that just because something is different, doesn't mean that it's bad.

I agree. Austin is that scary, scary place with... fairly normal people living in it, surprise!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with that. Taking the train to the city can often be a strange experience, if you're unsure of what to expect, but every place has good people and bad people--some places it's just more prominent. The main issue with places like Austin is lack of funding and without money it's very difficult to keep kids fed, in school and off the street. Yet, Austin isn't different at all from Oak Park/River Forest. There are families living in it that just want to get by, just like the rest of us.
