Dark Uncertainty
Joseph Conrad's short story, Heart of Darkness, was written about a man's exploration into the uncertainty of the "dark" Congo. What made this Congo so dark was its unfamiliarity. Today, everyone's "heart of darkness" is different. For each person there are things that they become accustomed to, things and situations they are around every day. Anything that is not familiar is scary, intimidating, and uncertain. For each of these uncharted experiences, there are imaginations that go along with it. Like Marlow's dreams of when he was a kid, he had a predicted outcome, we are all guilty of predicting how a certain experience will end up. Exploring into uncertain situations like moving, going to a new neighborhood, starting a new class, and the looming situation for all of us; college, makes everyone think of these outcomes and find the most desireable. Only exploring into the darkness will reveal the reality of these unknown situations.
