Perhaps the Brightest Heart of Darkness?

There are a lot of things I could write about as being our modern Heart of Darkness, which is truly quite sad, but I have chosen to write about what I think is probably the brightest Heart of Darkness that exists. By brightest, I mean that which we are most aware.

This, to me, is the huge country that our companies and population exploit resources from on the daily - China.

How many of the products surrounding you are stamped with 'Made in China'?

China is the central hub of modern imperialism; we inflict our own culture everywhere there. We exploit laborers of all ages and genders in factories so that we can save money on our products, but most of us don't think twice.

I imagine that if you asked most Americans what imagery they think of when they think of China, they will think of something like this...

...when the modern reality looks something like this...

I hope that this post shed some light on what is only one of America's Hearts of Darkness.

  1. I think the media has totally deceived us to make us believe that China looks like the picture above. How many movies have you watched where the characters go to China and there is no smog at all? I have a friend who lives in Beijing and he says there are some days you simply cannot go outside and breathe the air because it's so dangerous to your body. And truth be told it's scary to look at, myself, a born traveler, am nervous about ever going to China for that exact reason. It's blatantly looking at us in the face yet we are doing nothing, and we need to do something. Pronto.

  2. Those are some interesting photos. It's interesting how we pity China for what our outsourcing of industry has done and at the same time fear them for the economy that has developed around it. This situation clearly displays a lack of foresight.

  3. the relationship we have with them is very interesting because we rely on them for many resources, yet we constantly berate them for their environmental issues. Its a hyporcritical situation.

  4. I love that you added these photos to truly represent the illusion that has been maintained in America. I think that someone needs to pull the curtain and reveal the reality soon, otherwise the situation will only get worse. This frightens me because we need to take action and learn how to deal with these environmental issues or before we know it the whole world will look like this.

  5. I couldn't agree with you more. There are so many places in Asia that have been exploited by American companies to hire cheap labor and make maximum profit of their products. It's insane to believe that a country once so beautiful is covered in pollution due to the large number of factories needed for residents to produce an income.
