Because Meursault knows the inevitability of death and that his days, as well as everyone else's, are fleeting, he doesn't think it's necessary to live his life to the fullest. It seems that the thought of "I'm going to die anyway, so why does it matter?" is always in the back of his mind. The randomness and unexpectancy of life and what it will bring scares most people, but Meursault isn't phased by it in the slightest. He usees it as an excuse to be kind of a grumpy old man. It seems as if he may have wasted his entire life trying to be superior to everyone else.
