Rationality of Irrationality

Meursault is one of those people that doesn't necessarily not want to make big decisions, but just can't handle them. Or wrap their head around big things that happen. His mother dying, his job offer in paris, and lack of drive all resemble this.

Take when he was in Celeste's and the lady sat down next to him. She had drive, and Meursault wondered why. He can make small decisions like lingering over breakfast, but what to do when his mother dies entire eludes him.

  1. In the story, Mersault faces a series of big life events that normally don't happen very often. It makes you wonder if he was any different before the context of the novel, since it starts with his mother being dead and escalates from there. I'm convinced that his reactions are mostly due to his character traits, but could the events have anything to do with his actions?

  2. I like how you brought up the foil to Meursault and how her drive to accomplish one task after another is completely different from Meursault and his view on life. To Meursault, nothing really matters in terms of a career or anything else because they aren't "real", which might account for the fact that he has no drive to do any of these things.
