Trust

Trust is a 1990 dramedy featuring Adrienne Shelly and Martin Donovan. This movie draws multiple comparisons to The Stranger, but none more evident than the main characters of Matthew and Maria with Meursault. It is both Matthew's and Maria's lives that resemble Meursault's, but it is the ways in which Matthew and Maria change that is unlike Meursault's unchanging values. Matthew is a timid character that prefers to remain alone and is relatively unsocial. Maria tends to be less timid, buts struggles in her relationships with handling her poor relationships and her unexpected pregnancy. The movie details poor relationships, solemnity, and societal expectations. The same values that The Stranger focuses on. The evident transformations between Matthew and Maria are what draw the largest difference between Trust and The Stranger, while the values presented throughout the movie and the novel are nearly identical

  1. I agree. While watching the movie, I kept thinking about the similarities between Trust and Stranger. Matthew and Meursault are very alike. Even the way they give responses, they are straight-forward answers nothing but the truth. Maria reminded me of Marie because the both seem to seek male approval.
