There are Stranger Things than Beloved... spoiler alert

In the second season of Stranger Things, an alien invades Will Byer's body. Their thoughts become one. Will starts to receive "Now Memories," memories the Shadow Monster (an alien) is having in the upside down, which is like the alien's parallel universe of Will's town. The memories Will receives give him immense stress and reminds him of the terrible trauma he went through in season one of the tv show. His memories he receives are quit similar to Sethe's.

Sethe has rememories, which tend to be her more painful memories from her life at Sweet Home. They consist of her sexual assault, her mother being lynched, and her killing of Beloved. Sethe's memories cause her to be trapped in her past. Her daughter Denver notices her mother's past issues and feels trapped by them as well. Likewise, in Stranger Things, Will and his mother feel trapped by his Now Memories. They serve as dangerous reminders of the Shadow Monster's evil nature and power. His other friends are able to have fun at the arcade and heal from the disaster from season 1. However, Will and Sethe cannot get over their memories, current or past. They are both stuck in the past and need someone like friends or Paul D to let them escape their memories. These examples in literature and film emphasize the power one's past can have control over an individual's current life.

  1. This is a very nice comparison that I had not thought of before. Will and Sethe are very similar in that they both have flashback type events that show them a trauma from their lives.
