Fear of Feedback

In The Secret Woman we are all reminded of the double standard that exists for men and women. Typically, men are able to express their thoughts and desires freely and do not have to worry about people judging them or thinking that they are overly vulgar. However, women often have to edit themselves and remain dainty, wholesome, and pure. They are looked down upon if they are overly vocal with their opinions.

The woman in this story does a good job of rejecting this double standard. However, the man she is with and us as readers reinforce this standard with judgement. Many readers automatically assume that this woman is grimy, slutty, or obscene for simply doing what she pleases. A huge deal is made over her choosing what she wants, and if a man was in this situation, his actions would probably get less scrutiny and thought. This woman takes the thought and emotion out of sex, a character trait that is usually viewed as harmful for a woman but perfectly acceptable for men.

I think a modern day woman who embodies many of the characteristics of the secret woman is Beyonce. She freely vocalizes her opinions and her actions reflect those opinions. She demands equality and respect and is not afraid to call people out who do otherwise. She believes that women can do what they want, when they want, and how they want.I think a good example of her attitude is portrayed in her music video "Diva". She truly embodies the qualities of the secret woman and silences all of the double standards and stereotypes.

  1. I think this is a perfect example of the secret woman (or I guess the not so secret superstar woman, but none the less), especially since she repeats "a diva is a female version of a hustler" several times over. She defines flat out a female version of a common stereotype that modern society usually never looks twice at. When I think of a diva, I think of a really rude performer who can't stand not getting her way. But at the beginning, Beyonce reminds us that "diva" is just a successful performer or personality, no connotation added. The fact that we as a society circumscribed the negative on top of the definition is pretty unsettling. Beyonce definitely knows how to call out double standards.

She does it in style too: those tassel glasses are fabulous.

  2. I think that Beyonce is a very good example of what feminism stands for. While her "provocative" dancing and attire as well as firm feminist beliefs confuses some, it exemplifies perfectly that that the fight for women's equally does not mean that women should be ashamed of their sexual desires, a theme we find in The Secret Women as well.
