Ratatouille

Who doesn't love a good Pixar movie? I've never really considered any Pixar movie a comedy. It's a kids a movie. Kids movies have a genre all their own. However, Ratatouille was ranked as #27 on Rotten Tomatoes's (a movie review site) on their list of top comedies, which got me thinking. I believe that Remy, the rat-chef is truly a comedic hero. He is an average, but pompous rat. He believes he can do better than his other rat counterparts, and he does. He successfully becomes th chef of his own restaurant, but not without the help of his good friend Linguini. Remy is a true underdog. Rats are gross and dirty-- no one wants them near their food and yet he becomes a world class chef, even though he had to overcome many, many obstacles to achieve his goal. The idea of a rat becoming a chef is ridiculous, and yet Remy succeeds. Remy shows are that we are not always confined to the box that we are born into. Rats can chefs!

Humorous and heartwarming, Ratatouille is a comedy that fits Aristotle's classic definition of a comedy and encourages watchers to look beyond their horizons and dream big.

  1. I love Ratatouille! Thats actually really interesting to me that it is considered a comedy (and a good one) by such a well-known movie site. Watching Remy and Linguini work together and become friends will forever make me happy and I love that you wrote an analysis on their story.

  2. Nora this is a great post! I too didn't consider Ratatouille to be a comedy but it fits Aristotle's definition well. The movie enhances the understanding of the world through a little rat who overcomes obstacles to follow his dream.

  3. I agree that Ratatouille is a comedy and that it teaches us to follow our dreams. I also think that it reveals another truth. It shows us that some people are out for their own self gain (in this case the head chef) and we need to be careful because they will do anything in their power to get what they want.

  5. Great example of the uplifting nature of dramatic comedy. It might be unexpected, but comedy can have a very real impact on our understanding of life, in this case showing us that achieving unthinkable things can very well be possible.

  6. This is the perfect example of a comedy by Aristotle's definition. The comic hero fits, the hero(s) are basically the most ordinary characters you can find, and the ending couldn't be happier. However, I do agree with the kid movie genre thing.
