Throughout the story, it is clear that Paul D. begins to share his painful memories with Sethe, but he believes he is sharing too much. Sethe and Paul D. try to do the best they can to avoid the pain of their past and they both have their own coping skills to keep the past in the past. Sethe has effectively erased as much of her memory as possible yet, Paul D. locks his memories in his, "tobacco tin." Paul D. seems to separates himself from his emotions, alienating himself.
