Denver, Beloved, and Paul D

All her life, Denver is deprived of human contact outside of her family. Even when she is able to experience other people in an environment outside of 124, she is quickly ostracized by her peers because of her perceived family history. For a very long time, it was just Denver, Sethe, the baby ghost, and Hereboy: but that all changed when Paul D arrived. The only thing that kept Denver sane was the arrival of Beloved to counteract her anger about Paul D invading her home. Denver desperately clung to Beloved from the first moments she showed up at 124 sick and barely breathing. When Paul D wanted to expose Beloved for faking ill so he could discontinue her stay, Denver entirely denied ever seeing what Paul D is referring to (67). Denver has grown too attached to Beloved to let her leave.

While Denver's attention is reserved almost exclusively for Beloved, Beloved's attention is saved for Sethe. Beloved's obsession with Sethe is unusual at best. She watches Sethe's every move, thinks about her at night, and most of all, expresses extreme jealousy over her relationship with Paul D. On page 118, we are introduced to Beloved's perspective for the first time, and it brings some disturbing insight into her thoughts. Beloved resents Paul D because she does not want to share Sethe; she doesn't feel like she can share Sethe. The bond that Beloved feels towards her is confusing, though. Where does it come from? What super-powers does Beloved have that she can know Sethe so deeply and feel an almost painful connection with her? Why is she so hungry for stories about Sethe's past? These are questions I currently cannot answer, but I hope their answers will soon become clear as we continue to read.

  1. The relationship between Denver and Beloved is certainly a strange one. When Denver accused her of strangling Sethe in the clearing, the thoughts that ran through her head at the time were borderline disturbing. It seemed to come across as if Denver almost wanted Sethe dead, so beloved could turn her attention toward herself. Even if the reincarnation/Beloved argument is made, Denver's attraction towards her is far more disturbing then any sister-to-sister relationship.
