In part one of The Stranger each character had a very interesting characteristic about them and in one way or another they were all connected. When it comes to the main character nothing ever matters to him, he is unable to care about any decisions that may affect him and he is unable to have empathy for others. At the beginning of the story when he had to deal with his mothers death it seemed as if he cared more about his guilt and people knowing that her death was not his fault more than her death itself. He also took no part in planning his mothers funeral and he was completely ok with that. The mentality that nothing ever matters comes from when he stopped his studies and nothing after that changed, so from that one incident nothing in life held any significance.
One other characteristic that goes along with the "nothing ever matters" is people deserve to get whats coming to them. The owner of that characteristic is Raymond an abusive male who has a reputation for being with many women but they all end up in the same predicament. All women in his presence seem to get what's coming to them and the one to deliver that is him, he has no remorse for beating on women it just began to be the norm for him. When it comes to the main character he also has no problems with his actions because he does not care, and it is like if Raymond says its deserved then that's how it is. Later as the story progresses he begins to take on this mentality more and more.
As a whole in my opinion this story is not normal whatsoever, the main focus are on characters who have qualities that make them less human or relatable. It is as if this story is centered around anger and whatever happens happens, and nothing end with consequences.
